Although spring is in the air, the air isn’t always warm and welcoming at this time of year. Many cities have gone from unseasonably high temps to freezing in less than 24 hours. There’s no way this is good for our bodies and minds. It’s a popular time to get sick with a common cold, fever, or just plain run-down from what is often depressing weather.

As summer continues to knock on the door, a way to help prevent getting sick is to boost up your immune system. Following these simple tips can make the difference between sniffles and smiles while waiting for tank top weather to stay around.

Go Lean

Diets high in fat have a tendency to take a toll on immune systems. No more than 25-30% of your daily calories should come from fat, and it’s always a good idea to limit saturated fat as much as possible.

Eat Your Protein

Amino acids found in protein make up the cells of the immune system. The best sources for protein come from lean foods like fish, chicken (skinless), eggs, and beans.

Stay Active

Exercising 3-6 days a week will not only help get you in shape for the summer, but can do wonders for your immune system. Aerobic exercise increases blood flow and helps cells fight off and remain strong against infection. The added bonus of weight loss will also keep your body healthy and your immune system cells at optimal performance levels.

Sing!

Some studies have shown that singing enhances peoples’ moods. And enhanced moods leads to enhanced levels of antibodies to fight off germs. Believe it or not, but either way, a little singing on your commute or in the shower will at the very least be fun.

Give Your Pets Lots of Love

Simply rubbing or petting your pets can increase the protection your body has against germs. The loving and affectionate feeling you have triggers chemicals in the brain that enhance your immune system. So showing your furry friend some love will be a positive thing for both you and your pet.

Watch What You Eat

Fruits and vegetables are high in carotenoids which help your immune system fight off viruses. They’re also high in antioxidants and vitamins which are always good when trying to stay healthy. It’s also a good idea to start eating probiotic products for their “good bacteria” qualities. Yogurts, some cheeses, and Kefir drinks are good sources of “good bacteria.”

Get Your Beauty Sleep

Seven to nine hours every night is the recommended amount of sleep and it’s recommended for a reason. Your body restores itself while you sleep and you wake up with a refreshed body ready to fight off a new days of germs. Making sure you set aside time to actually rest is also important too. Stress is a killer on our bodies, so finding some time each day to rewind and not focus on the stress really helps boost your immunity and keep you in overall better health.
